Frequently Asked Questions

What is the total cost of customs clearance?

Our calculator sums all mandatory costs to legalize a vehicle in Georgia: Excise Tax (the largest variable — e.g., 3,000 ₾ for a 2.0L car under 6 years, or 9,000 ₾ for a 2.0L car over 6 years under the April 2026 law), Import Tax (18% VAT on customs value + excise), Customs Service Fee (~150 ₾), Expert Assessment (20 ₾), Declaration (30 ₾), Technical Passport (72 ₾), and Transit Permit (~1 ₾/day). Fixed admin fees total ~272 ₾ for all vehicles.

How accurate is the estimated price?

Our calculator uses official Revenue Service formulas updated for the April 2, 2026 law. Accuracy is typically within 5–10% of the actual customs bill. Two factors can shift the final amount: the customs officer's assessed market value of your specific vehicle (which affects the 18% VAT portion), and the daily GEL/USD exchange rate. For the most precise figure, check your car's customs valuation at rs.ge before clearing.

Can I import cars older than 2013?

Generally, no. Vehicles manufactured before 2013 do not meet Euro 5 emission standards and cannot receive Georgian license plates. You can still pay customs duties and physically import them, but on-road registration will be refused. The sole exception is Classic Cars — vehicles 30 years old or older (manufactured in 1996 or earlier as of 2026). These qualify for a reduced flat excise of 1.0 GEL/cm³ and are exempt from Euro 5 requirements.

Is there a discount for Hybrid or Electric cars?

Yes — Georgia actively incentivizes cleaner imports. Left-Hand Drive hybrid cars under 6 years old receive a 60% discount on Excise Tax: a 2.0L LHD hybrid pays 1,200 ₾ excise instead of 3,000 ₾. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are fully exempt from Excise Tax (0 ₾), making them the most cost-efficient import by far. Note: these incentives apply to LHD vehicles only — Right-Hand Drive hybrids and EVs do not qualify.

How much is tax for Right-Hand Drive (RHD) cars?

Right-Hand Drive (RHD) vehicles carry a 3× Excise Tax multiplier. A LHD 2.0L car under 6 years pays 3,000 ₾ excise — the identical RHD car pays 9,000 ₾. For a 7+ year old RHD 2.0L car, excise rises to 27,000 ₾ (4.5 GEL/cm³ × 2000cm³ × 3). This makes Japanese or UK imports significantly more expensive. Always factor the RHD multiplier before placing an auction bid.

Can I calculate customs for motorcycles?

Yes — ProAuto is one of the few Georgian calculators that covers both cars and motorcycles in a single tool. Switch to the Motorcycle tab and enter engine volume and year. Motorcycle excise rates differ from cars: they use age-based tiered rates across engine size bands (e.g., 51–250cc, 251–500cc, 500cc+). Electric motorcycles are fully exempt from excise. Fixed administrative fees (150 ₾ service, 20 ₾ assessment, 30 ₾ declaration) apply equally to motorcycles.

Navigating the Vehicle Import Process in Georgia (April 2026 Update)

Importing a vehicle into Georgia involves several critical steps and specific fees. Understanding the complete cost structure is essential to making informed decisions and avoiding unexpected expenses during customs clearance.

The Excise Tax is the primary cost, calculated based on the vehicle's engine volume and age. As of April 2, 2026 (new law): vehicles up to 6 years old are taxed at 1.5 GEL/cm³, while vehicles older than 6 years are taxed at 4.5 GEL/cm³ — a 5.6× increase for older vehicles. Import Tax (18% VAT) is then applied on top.

Additional mandatory fees include customs service charges (~150 ₾), expert assessment for condition verification (20 ₾), customs declaration (30 ₾), technical passport (72 ₾), and internal transit permit (~1 ₾/day, up to 60 days). Total fixed fees are approximately 272 ₾ regardless of vehicle price.

Crucially for registration, vehicles must meet Euro 5 emission standards, meaning they must generally be manufactured in 2013 or later. Classic cars (30 years old or older — manufactured in 1996 or earlier as of 2026) are the only exception, enjoying a flat excise rate of 1.0 GEL/cm³ and exemption from Euro 5 requirements.
